REGULATIONS FOR HONGKONG CADETS,
1. With a view of supplying the Civil Service of Hongkong, Cadets. Cadetships have been established, the holders of which are re- quired to serve in the Colony of Hongkong.

2. The Cadets, who must be natural-born British subjects, Examin- are selected by open competitive examination held by the Civil Service Commissioners in London, during the month of August in those years in which vacancies occur. The examination is identical with that for the Civil Services of India, Ceylon, the Straits Settlements and the Federated Malay States. Candidates must be between the ages of 21 and 24 on the 1st August in the year in which the examination is held.

3. The selected candidates will be appointed Cadets in the Hongkong Civil Service, subject to the Colonial Regulations in re force for the time being, which are published in the annual employment. "Colonial Office List," and will be expected to leave England for Hongkong about a month after the results of the examination are announced. It must, however, be distinctly understood that Hongkong Cadets are liable to be transferred to the Civil Service of the Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States or Ceylon, at the discretion of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, without being given compensation for any special local privileges or allowances.
4. Cadets are provided with a free passage to Hongkong upon Passage. signing the usual agreement with the Crown Agents for the Colonies, Downing Street, London, S.W., by which they are bound to repay the Colonial Government the cost of their pass- age in the event of their relinquishing the appointment within 3 years of the date of their arrival in Hongkong, for any other reason than mental or physical infirinity.

5. Each Cadet will receive salary at the rate of £225 per Salary. annum payable in dollars at the average rate of exchange for the 12 month preceding the 20th June in each year. Half salary will commence from day of leaving England, and full salary from the date of arrival in Hongkong. On arrival, the Cadet will also be entitled to house allowance at the rate of $45 a month, deduction of 4% is made from the salaries of all Cadets as a contribution to the Widows and Orphans' Fund of Hongkong.
6. The status of each Cadet on first arrival in the Colony is that of Unpassed Cadet and as such he will be attached to the Department of the Colonial Secretary to whom he should address all his official correspondence.

7. Every Cadet on arrival in Hongkong will be required to chinese devote himself for a certain time to the study of such Chinese studies. dialect as the Government may direct, and he may also be called upon to enter into a bond for the refund of the cost of his tuition in that dialect and the expenses incurred by the Govern- ment in sending him to Canton or elsewhere for such study, in the event of his quitting the service, without the sanction of the Government, within 5 years of his arrival in the Colony.
